Window style affects how a room looks, how it ventilates, how easy the windows are to clean and how well they seal. Here is a side-by-side look at three common options for Texas homes.

Sliding windows

One sash slides horizontally past another.

  • Pros: affordable, simple to operate, nothing swings into the room or outside

  • Cons: only half the window opens, seals rely on brush weatherstripping that lets air and sound through, tracks collect dust

  • Best for: tight budgets and spaces where nothing can swing open

Casement windows

The sash is hinged on the side and swings outward, usually with a crank.

  • Pros: the full opening ventilates, and the sash presses against its seal when closed, so casements seal better than sliders

  • Cons: cleaning the outside glass can be awkward on upper floors, cranks wear over time, and the open sash sticks out into the yard or walkway

  • Best for: hard-to-reach spots like over a kitchen sink, and catching breezes

Tilt & turn windows

A European design where one handle does two things: tilt the top of the sash inward for secure ventilation, or swing the whole sash inward like a door.

  • Pros: compression seals on all four sides with multi-point locks, secure ventilation in tilt mode, both sides of the glass cleanable from indoors, clean modern look

  • Cons: higher upfront cost, and the sash swings into the room, so window treatments need planning

  • Best for: homeowners who want the best seal against heat, dust and noise, and second-story windows that are hard to clean

Quick comparison

  • Seal and efficiency: tilt & turn, then casement, then sliding

  • Ventilation: casement and tilt & turn open fully, sliding opens halfway

  • Easy cleaning: tilt & turn

  • Lowest cost: sliding
