7 Signs Your Windows Need Replacing in Texas
Updated: Oct 7
Texas is hard on windows. Long summers, strong afternoon sun, big temperature swings and dust all wear them down. Many homes built in the 1990s through the 2010s still have their original builder-grade windows, and a lot of them are reaching the end of their useful life. Here are seven signs it's time to replace yours.
1. Fog or moisture between the panes
If you see haze or condensation between the two layers of glass that you can't wipe away, the seal has failed. The insulating gas has escaped and the window no longer insulates the way it was designed to. This is one of the most common failures in Texas heat.
2. Some rooms are always hotter
If one or two rooms, usually facing west or south, are much hotter in the afternoon than the rest of the house, the windows are often the reason. Heat comes through the glass, the frame and the gaps around the sash.
3. Rising AC bills
If your electric bill keeps climbing and your AC runs longer every summer, leaky or poorly insulated windows may be part of the cause.
4. Drafts, dust and noise
Hold your hand near the edges of a closed window on a windy day. If you feel air, or you notice dust building up on the sills, the seals are worn. The same gaps also let in road and neighborhood noise.
5. Warped, cracked or faded frames
Years of Texas UV can make vinyl frames brittle, chalky or warped, and aluminum frames conduct heat straight into the house. If frames look bowed or cracked, or the color has faded badly, they're past their prime.
6. Windows that are hard to open, close or lock
Sashes that stick, won't stay up, or don't line up with the lock are more than an annoyance. They're a safety and security issue, and they usually mean the frame has moved.
7. You're planning a remodel or selling
If you're updating a kitchen, redoing the exterior or getting ready to sell, new windows change both the look of a house and how it feels inside. It's also easier to coordinate window work with other projects.
What to do next
If you checked two or more of these boxes, it's worth getting a professional look. A good consultation should include measuring every opening and recommending glass by the side of the house, not a one-size-fits-all package.
