Is There Still a Tax Credit for New Windows in 2026?
Updated: Oct 7
For the last few years, many homeowners counted on a federal tax credit to offset the cost of new energy-efficient windows. If you're planning a window project in 2026, that has changed, and you may still see ads and quotes that haven't caught up.
The short answer
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, often called the 25C credit, covered qualifying windows placed in service from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025. The IRS lists it as available only for property placed in service before the end of 2025. (IRS)
In practice, that means windows installed in 2026 do not qualify for this federal credit.
What the credit used to cover
Under 25C, homeowners could claim 30% of the cost of qualifying exterior windows and skylights, up to $600 per year for windows. The windows had to meet ENERGY STAR Most Efficient requirements. If you installed windows in 2025, talk to your tax preparer about claiming it on your 2025 return.
Watch out for outdated promises
Some window ads and websites still mention the tax credit. If a salesperson tells you a 2026 installation qualifies for the federal window credit, ask them to show you the current IRS guidance in writing. An honest quote in 2026 should price the windows on their own merits.
What can still lower your cost in 2026
Utility programs. Local utilities sometimes run efficiency programs. Austin-area homeowners can check Austin Energy's current residential offerings, and San Antonio homeowners can check CPS Energy. Program details change, so confirm eligibility before you buy.
Financing. Most premium window companies, including ours, offer financing options that spread the cost over time.
Lower energy bills. The biggest long-term savings come from the windows themselves. In a Texas summer, tighter seals, better frames and the right Low-E glass reduce how hard your AC works.
Smart phasing. Some homeowners replace the worst windows first, usually the west- and south-facing ones, and do the rest later.
Is now still a good time to replace windows?
The tax credit was a nice bonus, but it was never the main reason to replace windows. If your current windows are fogging, warping, leaking air or letting in noise, those problems cost you comfort every day. Quality windows last for decades, so the decision should rest on the product, the installation and the warranty.
